The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based, trauma-informed listening intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and based on his Polyvagal Theory. SSP helps regulate the autonomic nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve through specifically filtered music, allowing clients to feel safer, more connected, and better able to engage in life and therapy.
The SSP uses specially designed music—delivered through over-the-ear headphones in a safe, supportive setting—that cues the nervous system toward a state of calm and connection. The music targets middle ear muscles that are connected to the vagus nerve, promoting regulation and helping the brain shift out of survival states (fight, flight, freeze) and into states of safety, social engagement, and learning.
Monthly Fee: $75 or Annual Fee (unlimited): $500

FAQs
Is SSP therapy?
SSP is not a standalone therapy. It is a nervous system-based intervention that is most effective when integrated into therapy or supportive care.
How is SSP delivered?
SSP is delivered remotely through a secure app and completed over multiple listening sessions. Sessions are guided and monitored by a trained provider to ensure pacing and support are individualized.
Do I need to listen all at once?
No. SSP is intentionally completed in short, gradual listening segments. The pace is customized based on each person’s nervous system response.
What does SSP feel like?
Experiences vary. Some individuals notice increased calm, improved emotional regulation, and better social engagement. Others may experience temporary increases in sensitivity or emotional responses as the nervous system adjusts. Support and monitoring are an important part of the process.
Is SSP safe for children?
Yes. SSP can be appropriate for children when carefully paced and guided by a trained provider, with caregiver involvement as needed.
Do I need special equipment?
You will need compatible headphones and access to a smartphone or tablet. Specific recommendations are provided prior to starting.
Is SSP covered by insurance?
SSP is not typically covered by insurance and is offered as a self-pay service.
How do I know if SSP is right for me or my child?
An initial consultation helps determine whether SSP is an appropriate fit based on goals, current supports, and nervous system readiness.
